Southwark Park, New Café

KLA are delivering the public realm for the new park office, café and public toilets in Southwark Park. The landscape is the cohesive element that unites and will act as an important site of movement and exchange.

There is a clear feeling of moving from an enclosed space into an open one as you pass through to the Oval. Our site will act as the entrance to this open space. As part of this special sequence it must mediate between the two, providing an even transition.

All the geometries in our site, but one, are curved; the lake wall, the oval and various pieces of hard landscape. The new café building forms a series of curved façades that respond to these geometries and looks to strengthen the sense of place and identity of the park. Our landscape sits in these circular geometries but also beside the rectilinear Gallery building. Our proposal looks to match these radii with a sequence of relating circles and arcs that also integrate the Gallery building.

Waterside planting and Grasses will help define this watery setting and frame views from the café out to the lake. A specimen tree, such as Scots Pine, will be planted in the circular grass mound, breaking up the Gallery edge and providing a focal point in the scheme.
