Pennine Squared Competitiona fragment of Pennine Lancashire in Burnley

Etched lines on the square recall roof patterns of the weaving sheds that used to occupy the site.

The line pattern of the old weaving sheds that occupied the site is etched into the surface of the new square. The idea of regeneration but respecting memories of past activities is embodied in the proposals.

This flexible space can be employed for everything from events and celebrations to relaxation and reflection. At the heart of the Weavers Triangle Conservation Area, the industrial past of the high chimneys are joined by the new light beacon marking the canalside regeneration. This lighthouse building houses a café, visitor centre and museum.

Opportunities for events within the square include an outdoor cinema with seating on wide steps leading to the canal. Informal seating on a grassy hill looks onto a stage within the community centre - this grass mound lookout will also connect the square to the Pennine hills beyond.
