London MET, New Squaredesign competition

A key element of London MET’s new Master Plan for Holloway Road is a new central ‘square’. This is a very important element of the plan as it can be seen as a unifying piece linking and interfacing with a large number of the buildings at the Holloway campus.

KLA were 1 of 4 teams shortlisted to bid for this project. Our proposals explored the framework of a square within a square, allowing levels to be successfully negotiated as well as supporting buildability of the project in two phases. Unique thresholds created on the upper level would link to the internal street and the identity of the schools would be expressed in doorways and surfaces. We brought these urban dwellers face to face with ecology in the square, which could then extend over the roof tops of the revitalised university campus. This framework was then enriched through a series of ideas which included SUDs, Programmed space in a Forest, Water for Play, a Sunken Garden and Playful Urban Realm.
